We're flying out to Frankfurt tomorrow to begin the first PhD Victory Vacation; we anticipate another one five to seven years later. This will be my third time in Germany, but it will be Nathan's first. I had previously visited my friend, Heidi, in 2000 when she was living in Eastern Germany and again in 2005 when she moved back to Bavaria. We had enough frequent flyer miles for Business Class seats for our journey home. We figure that we could do Economy going there since 1) the flight to Frankfurt is direct from SEA, 2) the departure flight to Europe is shorter than the return flight, and 3) we will be tired and slightly sad when it's over and thus looking forward to Business Class comfort. We'll visit the Rhine Valley, former East Germany, Nurenberg, Rothenberg, and Munich (yes, we are ending with Oktoberfest!).
Within days after our return, we'll start our drive out to Maryland where Nathan found a position with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. Given that my career is in public health, the Baltimore/DC Metro Area is also a great place for me. I actually have been selected as a delegate by the State Department to attend the Women in Public Service Project: Public Service and Global Health in Paris. This will be an interesting bullet point in my CV. I am looking forward to two trips to Europe this autumn!
