Winter Olympics 2010

We just got back from our Olympic Vacation. We spent Tuesday-Thursday skiing at Whistler Blackcomb where conditions were fabulous at the middle and the top of the mountains. While we were skiing, the resort was practically empty (that changed by Friday night).

On Friday, we spent the day in Vancouver. We first picked up our tickets and then wandered around the city. The crowds and enthusiasm were definitely present, especially around the torch relay. We got to see a flame exchange between two of the relay participants. Apparently the IOC then removes the torch canister so that you can never light it again.

Saturday was a bit stressful. We were supposed to see the Men's Downhill at Whistler Creekside, but they postponed the event because of "too much snow." Why would too much snow ever be a problem for skiers?! Well, the snow conditions have been fabulous in the middle and top of the mountain (it is a bit dryer at higher elevations), but at the base, it is too heavy and wet, so alpine skiers cannot turn on that terrain fast enough. We were devastated as they had moved the event to Monday the 15th, and by then we would be gone. Fortunately someone came up to us and said he would buy our tickets, so we sold them to him getting all of our money back which was enough for us to buy Men's Ski Jumping tickets. That had not been postponed, and in fact, the weather was glorious during the event. It was clear enough that we could witness every bit of emotion from Simon Ammann, the three time gold medalist in ski jumping!

Sunday was the Men's Moguls at Cypress Mountain. Cypress has gotten very little snow this season; most of the Pacific Northwest has been warm this winter. However, they have spent enough money to bring in snow from elsewhere! It was entertaining to us to see grassy patches everywhere except for the actual courses.
